Mafdet, the Egyptian goddess of justice and execution, embodies both fierce protection and gentle benevolence. Known as the “Slayer of Serpents,” she served as a vigilant guardian of the Sun God Ra, protecting him from threats during his nightly journey through the underworld and safeguarding the pharaoh, thereby upholding order within the royal court. Invoked to ward off evil and protect individuals from harm, Mafdet’s sharp claws symbolised her power—a swift and just force against chaos. Often depicted as an avenger, she punished wrongdoers and played a vital role in delivering justice in the afterlife.

Mafdet is pictured possessing the head of a feline, such as a panther, cheetah, or leopard, or sometimes entirely as a feline. As one of the earliest feline deities in the Egyptian pantheon, Mafdet paved the way for later goddesses like Bastet and Sekhmet, who also embody feline qualities.
