Hairouna 'Blessed' Gold Necklace

Hairouna is the name the Kalinago people gave to the island now known as St. Vincent, meaning "Land of the Blessed." It was one of the last strongholds of Indigenous resistance in the Caribbean — the Kalinago held the island against colonisation for centuries, longer than almost anywhere else in the region.

The name reflected how they understood the land itself: fertile, sacred, worthy of humility rather than conquest. Some accounts trace the blessing to the Kalinago's connection to the volcano and the richness of the soil it fed — a place favoured, and treated accordingly.

Though the island now carries a colonial name, Hairouna has never fully disappeared. It survives in local memory, in place names, and in the island's own beer, still called Hairoun today. To wear this blessing is to carry a name older than the maps that tried to erase it — one that remembers the land as sacred first.
