Queen Nanny of Jamaica, a self-freed enslaved fighter, was an obeah (sorcerer), healer, chieftainess, and general of Jamaica’s most feared, armed, and spiritual warriors, the Maroons.
The Maroons were and still are a resilient society that originated in the 1660s. They were people of African descent who escaped from plantations and British rule to establish refuge in the mountains. There, the Maroons were free to practice their traditional African traditions and values.
It is quoted of Nanny that ‘in battle, she caught all the bullets of the enemy and returned them in an obscene manner with deadly effect’.
