The inspiration

Atabey reigned as one of two supreme spirits of the Taino people of the Caribbean. She was the maternal energy of Earth and was revered as the goddess of the moon, fresh water, and fertility. She presented as multiple manifestations: the nurturer ‘Abatey’, the lover ‘Caguana’, and ‘Guabancex,’ a warrior who controlled the storms, volcanoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.

She's commonly depicted as a frog, sitting in a cross-legged birthing position favoured by Taíno midwives.
