The inspiration

In her native Ethiopia, Atete is celebrated as an Earth mother deity who governs fertility, creativity, and faith for the Oromo people. Often syncretised with Maryan devotion, Atete represents the matriarchal view of women’s divinity. Women in Oromo society use the power given to them by Atete to resolve conflicts, protect their own and children's rights, and protect the natural environment when they are violated.

The Atete ceremony is part of a belief system that holds women as intermediary figures between Waaqaa (God), who represents nature, and the physical world of humans. According to the myth, Waaqa listens to women's desires and responds instantly.
