The inspiration

Iset, also known as the “Goddess of Many Names” (Aset, Isis, Wuset, Auset, and the Great Lady of Nubia), was revered in ancient Nubia, in the Sudan region of ancient Egypt. Daughter of Nut (the goddess of the sky) and Geb (the god of the earth), Iset is depicted as a winged goddess associated with magic, grief, divine love, and motherhood.

She was both the wife and sister of Osiris, the god of fertility and the afterlife. After Osiris was killed by his brother Set, Iset transformed into a bird and travelled the earth for twelve days to find her lover’s remains. She was able to locate all parts of his body except his ‘manhood’, which she replaced with gold. She then became the virgin mother of their son, Horus. With the help of her adviser, Thoth, she escaped to a concealed swampland to raise her son alone. She taught Horus the arts of politics and war so that he could avenge his father.
