The inspiration

According to American folklore, Tituba, an enslaved Amerindian (Indigenous Americans), was accused of influencing a group of girls to practice sorcery. Although there was insufficient evidence to prove she was a witch, she became the face of the 1692 Salem Witch trials of Massachusetts.

The people of Salem associated spiritual practices with Africans and Amerindians. They identified Tituba as both and were convinced that the Africans and Amerindians were the cause of the town's evil.
